Intel has just released the most insane CPU ever! It’s called the Intel Xeon CPU Max 9480, and it has 56 cores and 64GB of HBM2e built-in RAM! which is super fast and power efficient. This CPU is so powerful that it can run Starfield, the most hyped game of 2023, without any extra RAM! How crazy is that? It’s part of the Intel Xeon Scalable family, which is designed for high-performance computing, data science, AI, and other demanding workloads. It costs a whopping $13,000.
But what makes this CPU so special is the HBM2e RAM. HBM2e stands for High Bandwidth Memory, and it’s a type of memory that is usually found in GPUs and AI accelerators. It has much higher bandwidth and lower power consumption than regular DDR4 or DDR5 RAM. And this CPU has 64GB of it, which is more than enough to run most applications and games. It looks like a winged CPU, with four CPU tiles, each with 14 cores, 16GB of HBM2e RAM, and two DDR5 channels. The CPU has a base frequency of 1.9Ghz, and a boost frequency of 3.5Ghz, and it also has 112.5MB of L3 cache.
But how does this CPU use the HBM2e RAM? Well, it has three different modes. The first mode is HBM Only, which means that the CPU boots and runs with only the HBM2e RAM, and no DDR5 RAM. This is good for application that need 64GB or less memory. The second mode is HBM Flat Mode, which means that the CPU uses both the HBM2e RAM and the DDR5 RAM as two separate pools of memory. This mode is good for applications that need more flexibility, and can access both types of memory as needed. The third mode is HBM Caching Mode, which means that the CPU uses the HBM2e RAM as a cache for the most frequently accessed data, and the DDR5 RAM as the main memory store. This mode is good for applications that can benefit from the high speed and low latency of the HBM2e RAM for the hot data, and still have access to the larger capacity of the DDR5 RAM for the cold data.
According to Intel, this CPU can deliver up to 3.7 times more performance than the previous generation of Intel Xeon Scalable processors, across various industrial workloads. This CPU is aimed at customers who need the ultimate performance for data science, AI, and other demanding tasks. So, what do you think of this CPU? Do you think it’s worth the price? Do you think it can really run Starfield without any extra RAM?
