Programming languages are constantly evolving, but some of them fade away over time. Lets look at languages that impacted modern programming.
-Cobol, A business-oriented language that ran many legacy systems. It declined as it was too complex and isolated from other languages.
– Algol introduced many concepts such as lexical scoping and nested functions, but It lacked input output capabilities and was overshadowed by its extensions.
– PLI merged the features of fortran and cobol for both engineering and business purposes. it tried to do too much and faced competition from other languages.
– CLU explored abstract data types and introduced concepts such as iterators, generics, and checked exceptions. it was never intended for practical use thus it vanished over time.
– Simula pioneered oops but it was Smalltalk that popularized it, and the concept of everything being an object. it faced challenges related to interoperability with tools and runtime performance and was replaced by Java.
– with essence of ALGOL, Pascal became an introductory language in computer science. It faced competition from languages like C and did not evolve with needs of programmers
These faded languages have influenced many modern languages with their innovations.
