The Open Source Summit Europe has kicked off, and we are seeing some exciting news surrounding open-source software. One such news is regarding how Long-term Support Linux kernel will be handled going forward. At the summit, Jonathan Corbett, executive editor at LWN disclosed that the LTS period for the Linux kernel is brought down to 2 years, from 6 years period. Seeing that currently there are 6 LTS Linux Kernels, In the future, after version 4.14, they will not be replaced with other kernel versions. While not many people use older versions of the Linux kernel, checking/improving the code for an LTS release is a major task that can take up a lot of time and effort to get it done right. so there’s no benefit in maintaining those. maintainers are unpaid and using Fuzzing technique may uncover bugs that requires the most attention.
