Apple hosted its biggest event of the year, the Wonderlust, on September 12. The event started streaming from 10:30 pm IST and introduced the iPhone 15 series. Along with this, the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 were also launched.
Talking about the iPhone 15 series, four models were launched – the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Plus. And the Pro models of the iPhone 15, as per the specifications page on Apple’s official website, support NavIC. This is the first time that Apple has rolled out NavIC support in its phones. However, there is still no clarity on the features that will be included in the iPhone 15 Pro models.
NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), India’s own satellite navigation system, made headlines last year when a Reuters report claimed that the Indian government is asking smartphone brands to ditch foreign GPS systems and adapt NavIC. Government documents seen by Reuters revealed that companies would need to make some hardware changes in order to support the navigation system, and that it would make the smartphones more expensive.
In line with the Indian government’s expectations, Apple has rolled out NavIC support in the recently-launched iPhone 15. However, only the Pro models support the Indian satellite navigation system.
